So we were going through dungeon. Final door was locked. DM wanted us to open it by solving one of those math puzzles. A whole bunch of stones that look the same, and our goal was to find the heaviest stone without using the built-in scale more than, like, twice. So my druid took his adventuring gear and jury rigged his own scale to test the stones against one another. We were technically in the right, which is fine by me because math-based puzzles tend to have one very specific solution and none of the PCs or players knew it or how to get to it.

Yeah, that seems to be the case with difficult puzzles. Players are a lot more likely to Gordian Knot them than to actually suffer through figuring them out the 'correct' way.

I like to run easyish puzzles with hints within the area nearby for if they remember experiencing them.

That sounds like a good way to do it! A bit of hand-holding is always a good thing to have on standby when your party comes up against certain kinds of puzzles.
