We had alternative ideas for this episode.  We were going to show Starlight checking in, while calling Gray, saying she wished he was there, only to open her motel room to find him there.  Another version in the "extended version" of this arc was that Gray was going to be one of the judges to counteract Patricia's negative vote.  We might still do that second one... and it will be done via a flashback.

You saw in an earlier post how we design new locations, and this was no different.  We settled on a beachside motel design and stuck with it.  The name of the town is Sandpiper Shore, so we have the Sandpiper Motel.

I actually like the direction you chose for the final comic, with Gray not being there at all. The fact that Starlight specifically took this trip alone, by herself, to get away from life for awhile…and yet she still called Gray to tell him about it and keep him in the loop. That says a lot. It says she’s still her own mare who wants to live life on her own terms, but she also has this special stallion in her life that she cares about more than she lets on, and we learn all this just because he’s the first person she calls when she gets there. He is the one she feels comfortable with. ❤️ I think a lot of that subtext would be lost if he were to just magically show up there with her, either in her room or as a judge on the panel. ‘Distance makes the heart grow fonder’ and all that. And also, I think it makes it a lot sweeter and more self-resonating if she wins her trophy all on her own, without having her sweetie pie essentially rig it by voting for her. It lets her prove to *herself* that she could do it, and that’s way more important, at least to me. These are my thoughts. Really, really loved this episode and this arc. ❤️

I did notice that the whole kite competition arc did go by pretty quickly.
