Believe it or not, we have limits on all the characters in terms of their facial expressions.  Often in rough drafts, their facial expressions are much more radical and model breaking than what they actually end up as.  It's pretty funny how sketches can often look better than final products.

As funny as breaking facial expression limits is, it goes beyond the scope of how our series tries to portray emotion.  You know how old cartoons had characters have their eyes enlarge as they screen or their tongue massively stick out while yelling?  That would certainly look weird in this series, but it just isn't what we do.  The image above shows some facial extremes with Twilight, Spike, and Starlight.  You probably can't really imagine them making these faces in AT&F.  Twilight's might be the most believable of the ones that could happen.  Starlight's looks seductively silly to a while new level.  Spike rounded out and got a silly weird chin and facial lines.

Take for example the silly expressions Spongebob can do in his series.  Now you certainly couldn't imagine those in say... King of the Hill.  We are somewhere in the middle of those.

Spike has a completely different face than his own normal one. That's a human face.
