You ever have to entertain someone you really don't know a whole lot and have no idea how to talk to them? This is this.

Story time with AT&F.  When I was a tiny tot I went over to my friend's house (next door) and wanted to see if they could play.  My neighbor's older sister opened the door and she said I could come in and wait.  She was probably 16 or 17 and I was just a little twerp.  I remember she pulled out a fun book and entertained me for a good half hour or so.  I can't imagine how either bored she must of been or been like, "why am I wasting my time with this kid?"  But now looking back on it, it was very nice of her to do that.  She didn't have too.

So... uh.... that's the story I guess.  ;-)

I was just reading about small talk the other day. I've been talked into writing some fanfic (something I swore six years ago I would never do again), and one of the challenges is that my protagonist/narrator has literally zero instinctive understanding of things like humor and small talk. I'd hardly call myself a master of small talk, but I've never made any direct attempt to learn to be better at it so I really don't know how someone who is putting specific effort into it would think about it. (Unfortunately I don't think the research I did there ended up being very productive, although I did learn some interesting stuff about humor when that was the relevant topic.)

To clarify, she is an alien, not a poorly researched character who is somewhere on the autism spectrum.
