While I’m preparing a new picture set, let’s continue the art talk showing the making of for this Violet Evergarden picture. I’ll soon make another post about colors, but I wanted to take a moment to talk about another very important element: perspective. In this picture in particular, we have a 3D object (the chair), so we need to be sure everything is well placed into a 3D space. That’s why I used some reference perspective lines to build the chair:

Sometimes I’m tempted to go easy on perspective and not use reference lines, but the effect is always quite bad, because you can feel something is off.

Learning how to draw objects in perspective may take a little time, but they’re not too hard once you get the basic concepts like vanishing points, foreshortening and so on. And most importantly, that will help you to make some very nice backgrounds in which to place your characters :)

I’ve assembled a short selected list of books/manuals you may like to check in case you wanna learn:

Vanishing Point: Perspective for Comics from the Ground Up https://amzn.to/38zU9KK

Framed Perspective Vol. 1: Technical Perspective and Visual Storytelling https://amzn.to/2DkCHyt

I’ve selected some titles focusing on the application of perspective to comics/illustrations because they’re a bit less “ boring“ (as in, less technical) than other manuals, but you’ll find all the essential informations here as well :)

Let me know if you want me to suggest more books each time I talk about a certain aspect of drawing :)
