Something I don't think you caught, The real father really thought he wasn't his kid. At the beginning he asks through the phone where he was from, and Julian says "Buffalo", and the father says "I've never even been to buffalo!" But then during the trial, Layla asks where he was born, and he says Toranto, and then says he moved to Buffalo with his mom. It then shows the father, putting his hand on his chin with a weird look on his face. It was only when he knew where Julian was born did he remember the woman he met there. He wasn't being a jerk and trying to get away with something, he really didn't know.
