well interestingly enough, Mother Gothel is actually a witch so calling her a witch is fine lol in the original story of Rapunzel, her hair is actually super long and she was locked in a tower so that part was all true. another thing: Mother Gothel never really showed affection to Rapunzel, the affection was actually to her hair. if you go back and watch it, whenever she ever showed any type of affection, she was always touching Rapunzel's hair or saying "my flower" or something like that. the attention to detail in this movie is impeccable. another thing that makes me sad when watching this movie is that Rapunzel's dress doesn't quite fit her. it's too short and the sleeves don't go all the way to her wrists, which means that she was also neglected. Mother Gothel didn't give a shit about Rapunzel, she only cared about staying young. one more thing: Maximus is the real MVP of this movie. I love him so much lol
