So fun theory that has been somewhat confirmed by the creators. If you look up Hyenas, they don't normally kill or eat lions. So we see at the end of Lion King the hyenas surrounding scar to attack him. The fan theory is that since Hyena's don't normally kill or eat Lions that Scar survived that situation and left the area. During his hero training Hercules came across Scar who attacked him and Hercules is actually the one who killed Scar. While Disney hasn't confirmed the full theory, they have confirmed that was indeed Scars body in this movie and not just a similar looking lion and so it confirms that the Hyena's couldn't have killed and eaten him or else there would not be a full cloak made from his skin.
