Agni-Kai's (fire duels) are usually to the death. That's why Zuko asked for forgiveness because his fathers abilities were so great he knew he'd die. The firelord and the Fire Nation value strength so fighting even though you knew you'd die would've been the "right" thing to do. The fact Zuko didn't even try to fight showed weakness in the eyes of the Fire Nation, the Fire Lord burned him and gave him and almost impossible task to do to leave him in eternal disgrace and despair. That's the tragedy of Zuko's story. He just wants to come back home.
