Sokka has really great character development. Even though he's a bit of comedic relief, he is very smart and very skilled. One of the things I love about this series is the character development.

I completely agree even in these first 10 episodes, the character development has been great, assume it just gets better and better haha.

So the Earth Kingdom is based off China and the Fire Nation is based off Japan. During WW2 when Japan invaded China Chinese troops would sacrifice entire areas and populations to fight the Japanese. Similar to what Jet does here. In fact the Chinese blew up a dam to wipe out Japanese troops but killed thousands of civilians as well. I believe that event was the inspiration for this episode.
