It's not just that the mother was cheating. When the guy kept wanting to talk to her, it was because he saw the story in the news, and he knew that he was the one who sold her daughter the drugs and that the teenage guy didn't drug her to rape her. That's why the mom tried to tell the dad that they shouldn't go forward with the trial.

I definitely understand your point that it would have been nice to know the objective truth from the beginning, but I don't think you would have felt anything for the character of Jason and his unfair death if all you heard was the "facts" without his own perception. We definitely don't want to victim blame, but you can kinda see where he's coming from with them having been together for a long time before and them both being intoxicated at a party.
