American Psycho (2000) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Eric Denney

I think at the end of the day the most important thing is just whether the viewers enjoyed the movie, and I certainly did. Bale's performance was off the charts. It definitely requires one or two re-watches before you can really form a good opinion on what was real and what wasn't, but either way it's definitely thought provoking and sparks a lot of conversation with others who've seen it (like your parents). Thanks for sharing!

I also saw the film for the first time and was just as Confused at the end :) As always a Great reaction !! For your Spooky Season i have following suggestions: "Fatal Attraction" from 1987 with Michael Douglas and Glenn Close !! For Me one of the Best Thrillers of all Time!!! Then "The Burbs" from 1989 With Tom Hanks!! Fantastic Horror Comedy !!! And "The Witches of Eastwick" from 1987 with Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Cher and Susan Sarandon !!! A Great Horror Comedy and a Classic

I think much of this movie is a commentary on the excesses of the 80’s, and the Reagan era (but also corporatism and Americanism in general, that were amplified during that time). It’s loaded with cultural details from that era that will be missed by many people. Aspects of the depiction aren’t literal. One example is when he pulled the bloody body bag outside to the cab, the camera is pointing back to the lobby, and there’s no blood on the floor.

Shaun2342!

i will be sad if we don't get GB Afterlife this spooky season.

A lot of people don't realize this movie is a dark comedy so it's meant to be absurd at times. Like Scorsese's AFTER HOURS or even HOT SHOTS! Also, at the end of the movie, it is a different building - it is the idea that there are all of these offices and they are a ll the same. This movie is like a commentary on White Privilege and all of these people are just interchangeable and if you look at the real life stories of Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Robert Durst, Michael Peterson... this movie was SO far ahead of its time, or I should say the book it is based on, was so far ahead of its time and just a really frank look at how people can kind of just so whatever they want and get away with it in certain worlds.

Thanks for the always consistent uploads and great content yall.

During my earlier comments I neglected to say thank you for another splendid selection, and reaction to it. This is an unusual film, and it can be a large challenge to absorb everything initially. I’m a big re-watcher, and it probably took three views before all aspects of it were fully grasped, but even then, some of it is left to personal interpretation. If you’re taking suggestions for spooky month, I would love to see your reaction to ‘Angel Heart’, with Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro, if you haven’t watched it. It’s loaded with creepy atmosphere.

I haven’t seen it, but I heard it described as “nostalgia bukake”. Is that accurate? 😐

Bale's performance was on another level! If I saw him on the street after this, I'd be crossing it haha we look forward to a re-watch! -Sam

Haha glad it wasn't just us! Our spooky seasons schedule is all set for this year, but we'll keep these in mind for future horror films! We definitely won't just be watching them in October! -Sam

I think this is the consensus! We definitely didn't put that together on first viewing haha but would love to give it another watch with this knowledge going in! -Sam

TBR_Schmitt

Definitely didn't realize that haha but damn that building confused us! The message will definitely stick a lot more on future viewings :) -Sam

Thank you, David! We'll definitely need to plan a re-watch soon! We have Spooky Season planned out, but Angel Heart is definitely on our list! -Sam

It's what they call "a way homer", meaning you'll be thinking about it all the way home from the theater, aka "wtf did I just watch". I took away from it that it's a dark meditation on psychopathy, narcissism, and capitalism lol Honestly, I think it can be interpreted in so many, mostly metaphorical, ways. If he did any of it and his crimes were covered up by other self interested people, that's just a rich New Yorker shooting someone on Fifth Avenue and getting away with it, that's speaking to how psychopathic/sociopathic certain parts of our society are, basically. OR, if it was all in his head, that's still pretty fucked up, but more like a weird meditation on the correlation between Narcissism and emotional impotence and a whole bag of messed up stuff. Then there's another level where it's a joke about American culture in general, like how Bateman is superficially perfect but soulless. Yeah you're probably gonna have to watch this some more, this is at least my third watch and I still don't know wtf I just watched 😂

Bale is excellent but it's a hard movie to like, and I think that was the point. I forget if its in the movie but in the book he kills a child for fun. The book was designed to be outrageous and push the boundaries. I'd be worried about anyone who DOES love the film tbh, lol

One of my favorite stories is that director Mary Harron told Willem Dafoe to play every scene three ways: doesn't think Patrick did it, isn't sure whether Patrick did it, and is convinced that Patrick did it, and then she cut them together at random.
