Hell fucking yes...one of my absolute favorites, and I think my favorite Wes Anderson movie. Very fucking cool...

Ellie Miller

Damn the soundtrack is so good. Somehow he put Ruby Tuesday, Hey Jude, and music from A Charlie Brown Christmas in the same movie.

Loved the reaction. Glad you enjoyed it! It is one of his most affecting movies for sure.

Steve Mercier

Oddly enough, Luke Wilson did do a single episode of The X-Files...an episode about vampires, that is extremely funny. Just thought I'd point that out. Oh, and my vote is for Rushmore next.

This is my favorite Wes Anderson movie. But it was also the first Wes Anderson movie I watched. It was one of those movies where I don't see the actors and really see the characters. The Life Aquatic is also very good and is a little closer in style to Grand Budapest.

One thing I think that's interesting about the Anderson poll is that the votes really skewed to Tenenbaums and other movies didn't get half as many votes, BUT I think the next time you do the poll another one will get a Tenenbaums-level amount of votes, and so on and so forth, so there will always be major support for the next best movie. In some cases you might poll a movie and it's only going to get X amount of support, but in this case it might be more that Anderson fans are mostly going to vote in a similar order. (My guess is the next winner will either be Rushmore or Moonrise Kingdom.) Luke and Owen Wilson (as well as the third brother Andrew Wilson, who is in this in two roles, Margot's biological father and one of the two voices on the tennis game alongside Jason Schwartzman) were close with Anderson back in the college days, and actually Anderson's first three films, including this one, were co-written by Owen. Luke is a lead in Anderson's sometimes-overlooked debut film Bottle Rocket, alongside Owen, and he has a small supporting role in Rushmore, which was Schwartzman's debut feature.

So far you've reacted to my two favorites and regard them in pretty much the same way I do. I suspect Rushmore would win a subsequent Wes Anderson poll, so you may as well pre-emptively add it to the schedule. After that, it's more of an open question. I love Moonrise Kingdom, but I think some people find it a little bit too precious (and it is). The Life Aquatic is good too, and it would probably edge Moonrise Kingdom in voting. Either way, I look forward to at least a couple more essential Wes Anderson reactions.

I've always loved that episode. It was also written by Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul fame.

A hilarious (imo) Wes Andersen movie with Owen and Luke Wilson is "Bottle Rocket."

I still haven't seen all of Wes Anderson's movies but of the ones I've seen, I still love his first movie, Bottle Rocket, it's a small movie but you can already see his style starting to form, and the Wilson brothers are great in it, including the third, Andrew Wilson, who had a cameo in this as the guy who cuts off Margot's finger (and he was Burrito Supreme in Idiocracy). Btw the more of his movies you watch, you'll notice a lot of the same actors AND character actors in minor roles, which is a lot of fun. Like Pagoda, that actor is in most of my favorites. I love Rushmore of course but I also love The Darjeeling Limited, which I don't hear often from other Wes Anderson fans, but I love it for the similar sort of dysfunctional family dynamic as The Royal Tenenbaums. Watching them in any order is fine, they're all unique movies despite having a similar style, but I tend to prefer chronologically when I'm watching a director's filmography, just to watch them evolve, especially in their earlier works.

Rushmore next! (for the Wes Anderson adventure)

TBR_Schmitt

Interesting! I could see that happening on the poll for sure! I had no idea there was so much history with the Wilson brothers and Anderson, that’s so cool! -Sam

Time's running out to get The Conversation in during 2024, the film's 50th anniversary! Really, I'd love an anniversary December, because you could also do Double Indemnity (1944), The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (2004)...

Jen Barnes

This is a VERY re-watchable movie. I've seen it 20+ times. Richie's "I'm going to kill myself tomorrow" is a quote from the French film by Louis Malle "The Fire Within". Wes Anderson said he was greatly influenced by it.

I know this is a lot of people's favourite (and I love it too) but I always preferred The Life Aquatic.
