Authors must always answer the question, when something new is introduced: "Why hasn't X (thing) been used for Y (Something the readers can easily think of)". Most of the time, the answer shouldn't be "Because nobody thought of it", though sometimes the continuation of that is "...yet."

(For example, was William the first person to discover not needing specific chants in Ostana? Of course not, but most of the wizard population had just died.)
