It's been a while since I've written any rambly stuff just kind of directed at all patrons. I might have said all of this before... but I'm going to say it again. It's just gonna be a long rant talking about what I think about when writing, so don't worry about missing anything important if you don't want to read all of this.

I get inspiration to write based on what I read or otherwise consume. Sometimes, I want to write a story like what I've read, or a particular part is neat and gets me thinking.

Many times... I even take things that stories do wrong and I think "I can do that better". Though it might be interesting for a chapter or two to read about a completely overpowered protagonist who can kill gods with their bare hands... it gets rather old fast. I like my characters to have to work for their advancement... and if they ever get to a level where they are strong, which isn't necessarily guaranteed, it will feel much better than just being born that way, or at least having always been that way since the beginnning of the story. They have to work for it, and suffer for it. I don't mean "suffering through absorbing a powerful artifact into my body, oh woe is me what a terrible fate", but actual work. Suffering might bring with it rewards... but it might not.

Even if the main character picks up a powerful item that only works through effort, you can usually be assured that it will function exactly when he needs it to. A legendary swords refuses to be used... but then works anyway when the character is really in danger. It can get kind of boring and predictible. Maybe it could be made more interesting by actually failing one time when the character really needs it, with some kind of tragic consequences. Suddenly, even if it works whenever they're in need every time after that, there's the seed of doubt. Will it work this time? It might not... and that makes it more interesting.

In the end, the result is effectively the same, but the way it feels is completely different, which can make the story much more engaging. Now if only my prose and implementation of all of my ideas was perfect... sadly, my writing has its own flaws, and I sometimes lean on stupid tropes too.. though hopefully I at least think about it.
