Here's a piece of lineart I've been pretty excited to show off since it was finished a few days ago. The Atlas.

I picked something similar in pose and angle to the original Atlas lineart for a nice throwback. Alan Blackwell then rendered out the lines and did the first half or so of the line cleanup. I jumped back in for the final run to add all the extra detailing that we couldn't get into the 3D model.

I'm also showing the version without shading this time because I think that matches up extra nicely with the old look. Goes with my goal of making this redesign lean more heavily on the old than the new.

Time to get your final words in for the love hate war over this mech haha.

Still figuring out how I'm going to paint mine when it finally arrives. This new design os so good it needs something special to set it apart

I like the pose, it’s not in motion, but just standing there like a titan , towering over the land

Love that you kept the rounded shoulders and head. An awesome update with hints of the original. Not sure about the Xs on the front tops of the legs but not a complaint.

Anonymous

I've always enjoyed the Xs on heavy panels with designs and have used it myself (probably more than I should have)

It feels like a nice compromise of old and new. Thinner than some of the designs I've seen for it but still thick in all the right ways.

Luckily the head offers a nice accent point. Can't go wrong with some white there or other flairs.

It's scouting time.

Absolutely stunning, well done!

So uh, when are we getting a new Technical readout with all this new great artwork?

Admittedly I was on the fence on this redesign when the 3D sculpt was first shown... seeing it in lineart form has really given me a new appreciation for this iteration. The proportions are a key element to the Atlas, and I think you've found a good middleground between the old and new in terms of overall feel. Can't wait to have this mini in hand!

ShimmeringSword

There are definitely some mechs that look better in lineart than they do in 3D, and this is one of them. Meanwhile some others look a lot better in 3D than 2D.

Where did you come from, baby. How did u know, i needed you?

Anonymous

It is a very nice design. I don't like the shape of the eyes, they are too tall for me. This is a minor thing and I guess that the 3D miniature will look awesome. The lower leg side has 3 times the number of details than the last sculpt.. and that was one of the best of the entire range. This miniature is bound to be amazing

The only thing I don't like about the new design is we're back to TRO 3025's 5 tube LRM 20. Otherwise it kicks ass!

ShimmeringSword

Haha that's fair. If the stock variant actually had the two LRM10s that people like to depict I'd be down for that. I didn't want to eat up the entire side torso with 26 missile holes, so I stuck with the source look.

ShimmeringSword

Blame the old Kuritan (with painted chain) and armorcast Atlases. They have those sloped in eye sockets leading to smaller glass panels and I liked em :D

The shading really adds depth and weight to these updates. I’d say you exceeded your goals for the Atlas. Is there going to be a new TRO with all these amazing works of lineart in the near future? Do you have similar images for all the mechs you and your team have done? Would love to see something like this for the Trebuchet.

ShimmeringSword

I think the Trebuchet is already in a Rec Guide but I'm not certain. First they all go into Rec Guides, then they'll either do a giant print Rec Guide, or do a new mega TRO focused on just SW or CI. Maybe errata/reprints of the existing SW and CI TRO's with only the mechs that have new art. That said, I'm not clued in on such decisions.

Anonymous

Thanks for the reply! I’ll have to look into these Rec Guides.

I wasn't a big fan of the proportions of the new Atlas when you first showed it, but this lineart has removed all my reservations. Congrats on a job well done!

Michael J Mullins

Just getting on to all this. Was there a significant difference between the TRO art and later renditions, including the IWM miniature? I feel like there's always been something different between the set of the head and shape of the eyes between, say, Battleforce 1 and Battleforce 2.
