Avalanche Gully (Patreon)
Content
Looking up into the gully, it's a steep climb ahead. Three pitches of waterfall ice stand before you and the next clearing. The trees thin out as you ascend into the alpine zone, with only a few mighty specimen standing tall against the battering wind. The climb looks precarious, as do the layers of compounded snow in the open patches above.
Hey folks, this map was made with inspiration from a recent ice climbing trip I took up in the Adirondacks (the avalanche part is NOT inspired from any real life experience mind you), as well as from my friend Domille, who has been making phased maps like these for years now.
I actually drew some of the assets for this on site in my sketchbook, sitting in the back of my friend's truck a few weeks ago between sessions of ice climbing and cross country skiing, and then cropped and colored them digitally on my tablet.
I have been trying to make a point of starting new assets or concepts in my sketchbook, integrating that and my mobile tablet into my workflow in search of better work-life balance. It has been a challenging time to be a digital artist recently with no signs on the horizon of things getting any easier, and so I'm choosing to weather this era of on-demand generated content by going back to basics and rebuilding a process that feels authentic in the hopes that it resonates with people.
Thank you all for your support,
Zach
