The book handled a lot of this quite differently - the bombing was portrayed as more of an accident than the show did (it was still them trying to blow up the landing zone and the shuttle showed up early, but it wasn't a debate so much as "it's already set to blow") also I believe it was the father who helped with that, while the mother didn't find out till later. Maybe someday people will believe Holden when he says he has a private Miller ghost in his head, today was not that day.
