With the thumb slap technique, we "slap" the string with the left side of the thumb to create a mild percussive sound that adds a lot of rhythm to the chord progression. This percussive technique can be used on the guitar, ukulele, and bass. It works extremely well on the ukulele because it adds a simple yet effective rhythmic feel. Enjoy the lesson! 0:00 About this lesson. 1:06 How to use the thumb slap technique. 2:26 Where to use the thumb slap technique. 4:35 Thumb slap and simple melody. 7:40 Busy thumb slap pattern. © Copyright All the music posted to this channel is created by and belongs exclusively to Marco Cirillo. Marco: Nice technique and tune: However. I think there may be a typo on Bar 16. The notes and the tabs are for E7 but it is written as E? At the 7min 5 sec point in the video you say are playing a E Major chord, but the notes on the ukulele neck, as shown on the screen are: G# D E B which are the notes for E7 What am I missing here that I don't understand given the tune is in the Key of C.

True! Thanks for letting me know! I will fix that soon (I am out of the studio right now). Hopefully, I didn't mess up somewhere else. It doesn't matter how many times I control a new video before publishing. There is always something wrong/missing hehe. Enjoy the video.

Hi Marco ... Thank you ... I loved this lesson! I've been looking for clear lessons on rhythmic patterns and percussive techniques ... Would love more like this. Sam (Berkeley California)

Wow! Sounds amazing. I've not seen the thumb slap on uke before. Can't wait to try it.

Hi Petra, the technique is the same for each chord. So you are saying that you can get the percussive sound on the other chords but not on the C chord? Let me know.

Hi Marco, Great tutorial! When I slap the G string with my thumb, there's this buzzing sound due to the string hitting the fret. You say that we should keep the thumb on the 4th string but it seems that this buzzing sound is longer when I leave my thumb longer on the string. How can I prevent this?

marcocirilloukulele

The strings should lightly touch the frets. If the buzzing is too loud, try to slap the string more gently. Let me know how it goes.

Hallo Marco. I tried the percussive sound on the G string (not on the C string) and it does not sound. I tried it the way you teach in your tutorial but it doesn’t word. Do you have any further advise how to make it sound? Thank you! Regards, Petra

marcocirilloukulele

Hi Petra. Sorry about that. Can you try on the C string? Let me know if you can hear the percussion more. Speak soon.
