Hell yeah. This is probably a mess, the key and chords are probably all wrong - I dunno, I've never done this before - but this is the first actual complete song I've ever made where I wrote all the music.

I was aiming for something a bit Talk Talk/Life's What You Make It-y. The only thing on this that I wasn't responsible for is some of the background percussion. Everything else was done by me; bass, keyboards, synth whooshes, fake guitar - the lot.

This might sound like I'm parping my horn, but I'm under no illusion that this is any sort of work of art. As a complete amateur, who is at no risk of stealing Chris Jerden-Cooke's crown, I'm pleased with how this has turned out. I've come a long way since I posted that piano noodling the other day.

I mean, I know this is like a little kid showing his parents a drawing he's done, but... well... it has shown me that if nothing else, I'm slowly starting to get grips with this whole songwriting thing.

Please stop me from doing this again tomorrow. I should be working.

I've just listened to the whole thing and I think that you should be proud of this. It actually does sound a bit like that Talk Talk song. If music is about anything, it's surely about translating an idea or a feeling to another and I do feel that you achieve that here. There's an old OMD quote that sums this up nicely - I cannot remember it verbatim but to paraphrase, non-musicians might take longer than musicians to do certain things but they will also see/do things that those trained musically would never think of.

This is grand. More ambitious than my first attempts at song writing.

And John, or rather OMD were right. Whether I like it or not, I’m often limited by musical rules. Stuff I don’t even consider trying because a bit of my brain is already certain it won’t work. It’s a freedom that balances out not being able to play a chord and then immediately think of ways you could follow it up.

Thanks, John. This is true for writing as well. In the early days, scripts would just pour out of me, but as I learned "the rules" they take longer and longer. It's weird.
