Unbeknownst to Ellen, Eric and Ellen have a lot of history. In the pirate captain's former life, he worked for her to pay for the medicine that helped his mother. Having run over Draegnar, getting into fights and shootouts for payments to the Dead Tales owner, Eric was but one of many that Ellen employed to make her own ends meet. 

However, in his old life, those ends led to her mysterious demise. Now, Eric and Ellen sail together, the latter now the second-in-command and lover to the former. Managing the ship, the crew, the supplies, and the treasure for Eric, Ellen questions her worth when she compares herself to the talented, powerful, and otherworldly men and women on her Captain's ship. Nevertheless, because of a fallen bet, the betrayed captain will sail her far and wide, proving to her that she shall stamp her foot down on the powerful and she shall be the one to make them lower their heads.

...that is if he doesn't piss her off too much. But something told her, he enjoys the angry looks. It was what attracted him to her in the first place.
