The premiere league open source Dreamcast emulator #Flycast just keeps going from strength to strength! Not being content with being the first open source Dreamcast emulator to have HLE BIOS support, Windows CE support (not available in many non-open source emulators), and DSP audio support, we are now introducing automatic widescreen patching for the vast majority of games available for Dreamcast! And it's available right now on #RetroArch!

Basically, there are two ways to do widescreen - through a catch-all algorithm, or by applying selective patches per-game. The previous method already existed but it's very hit and miss and can often times lead to undesirable things like geometry culling outside of the normal 4:3 view range and other visual anomalies. These patche however avoid most of those visual anomalies, and it starts looking a lot more like how a proper remaster of these games would look like.

So that is essentially what we did. We went through a great deal of Assemblergames threads, gathered up the majority of the GameShark / BIN cheat codes that were gathered up by the community, and we apply them on a per-game basis. This means that there might be a few games that still don't support this feature, however, as time goes on, we can add more of these entries.

You can see the results for yourself in this video. This is available right now if you download the Flycast core from RetroArch's buildbot. Happy gaming!
