Do you like classical music? It’s often said that metal music started with Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple used this piece to create the most popular guitar riff “Smoke On The Water”, using inversion technique. Here’s 3 tips to get that classical sound in your playing

1. Harmonic Minor Scale

Step 1 is the harmonic minor scale (E-F#-G-A-B-C-D#). The raised 7TH degree creates a major V chord (B), resulting in stronger resolution to the one chord (Em)

2. Classical Chords

The classical chord progression in a minor key is Em-Am and B. Use common tones whenever possible to create smooth voice leading

3. Putting It All Together

Combine the scale and chords to write your own classical music. Come up with a riff or lick that targets the chord tones in Em-Am and B. Channel the power of lord Beethoven and finger the g string on level 69!

LIFE UPDATE:

I’m currently on vacation in Michigan hanging with family and getting accused of being a satanist muhahaha. I’m playing some beautiful solar and Taylor guitars to get inspired. How’s your summer going?
