I never realized how intricate music can be until I studied form and analysis in college

Good composers often follow specific formulas to achieve a desired result. Sonata form, Ternary form, Binary form and of course the classic verse chorus, verse, chorus, bridge used in popular music.

Metallica's ORION, released in 1986 on the Master Of Puppets album, is one of their most popular tracks

Check out some of the main riffs in the tab below. It's brilliant how the riff starts in E Aeolian, then changes to E harmonic minor. This is known as modal interchange. Keeping the tonic foundation E but changing the scale. This gives us the necessary context to navigate through different keys smoothly

I love the punishing heaviness of Riff B. The syncopated feel, huge power chords...I just can't get enough. The bridge seems a bit out of place to me and a let down in energy.

What are your thots on this classic track?

I haven’t listened to that song in years. Back in the day I used to like the song and I still do just not as much. Actually I never considered MOP their greatest album. I liked RTL and KEA better, still do.

One of my favourite songs ever, and the middle section is a big reason why - so many beautiful melodies and harmonies that just brings me to another place, and that in a way sound both happy and sad at the same time. The whole vibe was very unexpected for a "thrash" band (composed by Cliff, so I suppose that explains it), and it adds to the already prevalent diversity of the album.
