What was the first GUITAR RIFF that started Metal Music?

Ritchie Blackmore's 0-3-5 or SMOKE ON THE WATER was recorded in 1971 and could be the first metal guitar riff. Ritchie came up with the riff by playing Beethoven's 5th Symphony backwards. This is called RETROGRADE....which is something Bach did all the time in his compositions. We'll be learning about this concept more in a Counterpoint lesson I'm working on.

Black Sabbath's, "Black Sabbath" was released in 1970 and is inspired by Gustav Holst's "Mars The Bringer Of War." Bassist Geezer Butler listened to the piece and was so inspired he brought it to Tony Iommi. The two crafted a riff that is based on the main theme.

What's your pick for the first metal riff? Put your option below if it isn't on the list.

Spinal taps “break like the wind” was a major turning point in Rock history

Heavy metal started long before all this albums and bands, is a stereotype more then a genre. In musical phrasing it can 't be other then Black Sabbath with some protometal songs that came out of the driving force of the given stereotype. Basicaly Black Sabbath are the metal band for the first wave, and if it would've ended with them the genre would've been complete. All that is after the turning point got a shade of kitsch. For me personaly all thou Hendrix could have never been a metal artist had the stereotype in all that he played, but I guess was just the vibe of his generation. Like i've said it before, metal only had taken the shape of other predating aproaches to music and gave way for making it big, bold and proud.
