Randy Rhoads had a unique sound in part due to his classical influences. Using harmonic devices like the German Augmented 6th Chord in metal can yield a very cool effect. 

So what is a German Augmented 6th chord? Let's say you're in the key of B minor....the augmented 6th chord is built off the minor 6th scale degree or (G). Build a dominant 7th chord  from that note and you've got yourself a Ger Aug 6th 

B Minor German Augmented 6th Chord: (G-B-D-F)

The augmented 6th refers to the resolution of the chord. Normally, the 7th of the Dominant 7th chord is resolved downwards but in the case of the augmented 6th chord, the 7th is relabeled a 6th and resolved upwards.
