One of the progressive metal guitarist's favorite modes is the Lydian Mode. 

It's a major mode....but with more tension than regular major, due to the #4 scale degree. 

John Petrucci, Joe Satriani and pretty much every prog metal axe grinder reps this epic sounding mode 

I've attached the Lydian scale and primary chords below. The chords for A Lydian are A and B. This is extremely important to achieving the lydian sound. If you're not using these chords, you won't achieve that iconic Lydian vibe. 

Just plug in the I-II formula, or two major chords a whole step apart, in any key and you'll get instant Lydian. For example, E-F#, G-A or D-E.
