Do you have a favorite mode? Randy Rhoads often used modes in his playing, along with blues and classical sounds. I've attached the chord progressions for each of the 7 diatonic modes below. 

Here's the real secret to using modes that few guitarists understand. It's all about playing chord progressions and not scales. 

In fact, no matter what scale you play in the diatonic set, I could make the scale you're playing sound like Locrian if I wanted. The secret is understanding the primary chord progressions that drive each modal sound. 

It's like the overtone series but with modes, so don't ask me where these chord progressions came from. They're built into the universe somehow....
