Tosin Abasi wields the modes with power in his progressive metal compositions. In order to gain a command of the modes, you need to know more than scales. Thus I've included every diatonic mode, with its chords in the tab below. 

It's extremely difficult for me to get students to pay attention to modal chords. The reason is because we're taught that modes are scales. While that is true, it's only 50 percent of the information you need to make music with modes. The other 50 percent is chords. You're not going to be successful in replicating a modal sound without knowing the chords. 

Once you get this concept, it's like seeing music in color. Suddenly everything makes sense. I can't think of a more powerful concept in music than understanding modal harmony. Try recording the chords, then practice soloing over the loop with its corresponding scale.
