Find The Root Or Tonic Note 2. Determine Whether It's Major Or Minor 3. Select The Right Major/Minor Mode To find the root note, simply hum the pitch that sounds like home. Then, find that note on the guitar. Next, play a minor and major 3rd interval from the root to see which sounds best. A minor 3rd is a step and a half. A major 3rd is 2 whole steps. Finally, select the appropriate mode and go for it! In order to determine which mode is correct, play each pattern and see what sounds best. If the song is minor, Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian and Locrian are your options.
