How To Become A Shred Guitar God!!

So grab your axe and prepare to enter the Shred Zone!! 1. Alternate Picking Every shred guitar god needs some serious alternate picking chops. Yngwie Malmsteen and John Petrucci are two shredders who have mastered the technique on the highest level. That being said, I've chosen a lick that combines both of their styles in to one killer practice lick. Mechanics Of Alternate Picking: Hold the pick between the bottom of the thumb and the side of the index finger. Angle the pick 45 degrees towards the floor and find an anchor point on the instrument. I plant my middle, ring and pinky fingers just below the high e string. 2. Sweep Picking Sweep Picking is one of the best ways to execute an arpeggio. We'll take a B Minor arpeggio borrowed from the C form of the CAGED System. Sweep Picking Mechanics: In order to sweep pick, use one continuous downward motion when ascending the arpeggio. Letting the pick fall from string to string. Then, reverse the direction and bring the pick towards the ceiling to descend the arpeggio. 3. Finger Tapping Finger Tapping is a killer shred guitar technique. It allows one to reach notes previously unattainable. It's a bit like playing piano. We'll use a Bm-G-A chord progression to execute a pedal tone lick you're gonna love. Finger Tapping Mechanics: The key to executing finger tapping is to develop the strength of your fingers. Since there is no picking involved, you must rely strictly on hammer ons and pull offs. Pull off into the fretboard and towards the ceiling with your tapping finger. This provides the best tone. Also, isolate the fretting hand, playing just that sequence. 4. Legato Legato means, smooth and connected, or using very little picking. Basically all hammer ons and pull offs. I've chosen a septuplet lick using the Locrian Mode for this exercise. It'll turn you into a monster!! Legato Mechanics: In order to become a legato leviathan, start slow with purposeful accurate hammer ons and pull offs. Just pick when you change strings during this lick. You can also work on trills to bolster your finger power. 5. Hybrid Picking Finally, an often overlooked technique in the shred universe is Hybrid Picking. Not many shredders work on this technique, so it'll put you out in front as a shred god quickly. By using the pick and fingers in conjunction, you can transcend previous technical barriers. I've chosen a killer Bm-G-A chord progression on the A and D strings to work on the technique. Hybrid Picking Mechanics: Pick the A string then pluck the D string with your middle finger. Then, hammer on to the A and D strings for some hybrid picking firepower!!
