Sometimes we get stuck in the details and fail to see the bigger picture. Forcing yourself to memorize keys, scales and chords is a slow, painful process. Instead, make music theory your b!tch. Think of it as a shortcut to get the sounds you want and not system of rules that must be followed. The more you view theory as unbreakable laws, the harder it is to learn

Instead of being concerned about not making any mistakes and playing the "right notes", give into your PASSION. Beethoven said, "to play a wrong note is insignificant but to play without passion is inexcusable." Music is an emotional language that you must feel first.

The famous producer Rick Rubin talks about this in his book THE CREATIVE ACT. Listen to your instincts in the moment and just go for it. That being said, it's extremely valuable to train your instincts. If you don't have a firm grasp of how to play in key, it gets in the way of realizing your ideas
