SHRED WARS: Hammett vs Friedman (Patreon)
Content
Who would win in a shred war, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, or Marty Friedman of Megadeth? In this post I'll break down 3 primary metrics to determine which lead guitarist is better muhahaha!

⭐️ Before we get started, I want to make something clear. Music isn't a competitive domain like sports. There's many subjective elements that factor into what a person likes and dislikes
🎸TASTE
The first thing to consider when comparing two guitar players is TASTE. Everyone's taste is different based on how they grew up and a million other factors. That being said, by far most people's taste aligns with Kirk Hammett. Here's the proof...Metallica has sold 125 million records, whereas Megadeth has only sold 38 million. I think the reason Kirk Hammett's playing has helped Metallica sell more is due to one simple thing. THE BLUES. Metallica is basically a blues band on steroids. The blues is a popular style most people are accustomed to. On the other hand, Marty Friedman and Megadeth utilize sounds that are less familiar, like exotic scales.
⚡️TONE
Tone is a HUGE part of how we perceive guitar players. I remember the first time I heard Eruption...my mind was blown by the incredible TIMBRE. Timbre is a fancy word that means, "tone quality." Tone comes from two things, your fingers and your gear. This is perhaps the most subjective aspect when assessing a players worth. Overall, I'd say Metallica's gear and production value is on a higher level, especially live. However, when it comes to expressive capacity, I'm going to give Marty Friedman's fingers the win. I love how he targets exotic note choices instead of strictly pentatonic and blues lines
⚡️TECHNIQUE
Technique is an important element in any SHRED WAR. Most people agree Marty Friedman is the clear winner here. Both Kirk and Marty have formidable chops but Marty is like a 666 Samurai Shred Lord. His ability to improvise on the spot is SCARY. I've seen Marty trade licks with Paul Gilbert and hold his own easily. Also, Marty shared the stage with Shred God Jason Becker many times. They played together in a band called Cacophony. This no doubt helped him achieve a higher level of technical precision.
