It's time for a brand new S&F Extra! Here's a behind the scenes look at what I worked on last month.

Down here, I'll provide some info about each piece! And in the gallery above, you'll find step-by-step animated process GIFs, sketches, and final illustrations.

Volume 7 Softcover Art

Behold, the cover art for both our new softcovers is now complete! I've included a process GIF above of some of the different iterations we went through for cover 7. As you'll see, it took us a few attempts find a colour scheme we liked for the Fuzzy and Brain piece! The earlier, more greyscale attempts were interesting looking, but I didn't feel like there was enough visual separation between Fuzzy and Brain's eyes. The final version, coloured by Invader Zim colourist Fred C. Stressing, unites Brain's eyes with the rest of his head by using a strong, sinister red colour scheme for them both. And for our final tweak, we decided to emphasize the cracks further, especially over the eyes, to make it all read more clearly. It took some work, but I'm really happy with how it turned out!

Guybrush Dog

This was a fun commission I did recently... a dog dressed as Guybrush Threepwood from the Monkey Island games! I had a lot of fun with this piece, especially the background.

Platformer Process GIF

I thought I should include a process GIF for some of the platformer art I've been drawing, so you all could see how they get made! As you can see, I colour them six at a time in one large image, and I start by picking the background colours for each drawing. It's a little different from how I normally colour, and I've been surprised to see ho much having that background colour in place winds up influencing the colours I end up picking for the characters.

Conscience Cat and Brain Pin

This is a new set of pins that I designed for the upcoming book kickstarter, featuring two of your favourite "cats"! Above, I've included a process GIF for the Brain pin's creation. As you'll see, I wound up tweaking Brain's leg positioning quite late in the process. I liked the original drawing, but after seeing it finished and talking to some friends about their own pin collections, I realized I didn't really like the look of character pins that require having weird cutout holes in them. The final version, I think, is much more "solid" looking and appealing as an actual pin.

Boba Dog

Another recent commission, this one coloured with markers. I don't have a lot to say about this one... I just thought it was cute!

Six Fanarts

This was a meme that was/is going around on cartoonist social media lately. I drew all six of these based on random suggestions. Some of them, luckily enough, could double as inclusions in my platformer series! But some are things I probably never would have ever thought to draw otherwise... particularly Egon and Piccolo. (I actually have never even seen an episode of Dragonball Z.) In any event, I thought y'all might enjoy seeing the full size, original black-and-white art for each piece, so I included it in the gallery above!

Kate Sanders

Last but not least, here's our latest villain, Kate Sanders! This was originally Saucy Hippo tier commission that featured a more bath-appropriate wardrobe (or lack thereof)... But I really liked this G-rated variant I made, too, so I thought I'd share it here. It just wound up capturing her personality so well! I like Kate a lot. I hope to do more stuff with her in the future.

Thanks again, friends! See you next time.
