I was pleased to have the opportunity to chat with writer and critic Brooke Obie about Celine Song's Past Lives. In this conversation, we start by talking about why the film resonated with each of us. Then, starting at around ~4:00 into the conversation, we go full SPOILERS and dive into the film's most memorable sequences.

You can read my interview with Celine Song right here. Thanks, as always, for your support.

Hi Dave. I only just yesterday went to see PAST LIVES, so I can listen to this now. I have no words to convey how beautiful and deeply affecting this film was. It’s miraculous. Two things I want to pass along to you: 1) I took two of my nieces with me, both of whom are 16, both of their parents fled Vietnam as refugees in 1980, and the main reason they were willing to go see it with their old gay uncle IS THAT THEY HAD HEARD A LOT ABOUT IT ON TIK-TOK!! (They don’t go to the movies very often.) They were moved by the the film, too, and it led us to have some pretty deep conversations about reincarnation, about the choices their parents made to leave Vietnam, and even about crushes they’ve experienced recently. And 2) the main reason I made a point of getting myself to this movie ASAP was your strong recommendation on The Filmcast…and at the time you showed great restraint in not telling too much about the plot of the film. (I find that trying to synopsize the story of this movie when talking about it with people does it a disservice…it sounds simplistic when I try to describe it, yet it’s SO layered and complex.) So: thank you as always for pointing me in the direction of a compelling work of art. PAST LIVES is just…wow.
