What I've learned the past few months

Changes are coming to my Patreon page! [The video above and the text below should cover similar material]

Recently, I've re-started the Decoding Westworld (now Decoding TV) and A Cast of Kings podcasts with new co-hosts. I've had such an amazing time getting to know Siddhant Adlakha and Kim Renfro, and listeners really seem to enjoy our dynamics. But I've also realized what potential there is to build long-running, self-sustaining podcasts with them. The more I thought about it, the less it made sense to funnel listeners for those podcasts to my personal Patreon page.

Moving TV coverage to DecodingTV.com

Going forward, I've decided to move all my TV-related content to DecodingTV.com. My main TV podcasts and coverage will remain free with ad support, but for $10/month, subscribers get ad-free episodes and bonus segments of "Decoding TV," "A Cast of Kings," and podcasts/episodes covering other shows in the future. I’m excited about what we are already planning to cover and just as importantly the collaborators I’ll be working with. I’m not quite ready to announce all of them. Stay tuned!

I have some FAQs below but there are a couple things I want to impress upon you. The first is that it's only because of your support that I've been able to get to this point. For Decoding and Kings, I've funded the equipment and paid hosts using money from this Patreon and I wouldn't have been able to pull it off without the encouragement and funding I've received from you all. Thanks for helping me build this next step in my online career!

The second is that I know it's a pain to subscribe to yet ANOTHER website or service. I didn't make this move lightly (on the contrary, a lot of agonizing went into it!). I'm really sorry about any inconvenience, but I hope you enjoy the benefits this new approach will offer.

Alright, here are are some FAQs:

Q. Will the Decoding TV and Cast of Kings podcasts continue to be free?

The podcasts will continue to be free and available on their public-facing podcast feeds, as usual. If you become a subscriber at DecodingTV.com, you'll get a private feed for ad-free episodes and bonus segments for both podcasts, plus the ability to comment on show episodes.

Q. Wait, I just subscribed to your personal Patreon for all this bonus TV stuff! Do I get a free membership to Decoding TV?

Every member of this Patreon will get a trial subscription to DecodingTV.com! If you are at the $10 level, you'll get a 3-month trial subscription and if you are at any amount below that, you'll receive a 1-month trial subscription. I've already sent these trials out to the email address you provided to Patreon, so check your spam folders if you don't see it!

If for some reason, you didn't get your trial subscription, please reach out to me via any platform (Patreon DMs, Twitter DMs, my personal email address) and I will make sure you get a free trial.

Q. Will your personal Patreon continue to exist? If so, what will be on it?

I think of the personal Patreon as a space to incubate ideas and run experiments. In fact, it incubated the idea for DecodingTV.com!

As a result, I don’t know exactly how it will evolve but for now, here's what you can definitely continue to expect in terms of bonus content:

  • Weekly box office recaps with Scott Mendelson
  • Dave on Dave with David Cho
  • Watch Parties
  • Office Hours
  • Personal Reflections in newsletter form

Beyond that, in full transparency, I'm still in the process of figuring it all out. But I hope you'll be along for the ride.

Q. I can't support both your personal Patreon and also Decoding TV. Should I cancel my subscription here and go there?

If you are primarily here for my TV-related content, then yes, please feel free to cancel your Patreon subscription here and sign up for a new one at DecodingTV.com. This will not hurt my endeavors at all and will even help me understand which content you are most interested in. If you are here just to support me and my online endeavors/creations, please feel free to stick around. Either way, your support is incredibly valuable and I’m humbled by it.

Q. Will you still post your finale discussion of Better Call Saul for all Patrons here?

Yes! And it will also be on the main Decoding TV podcast feed as well as at Decodingtv.com.

That's all for now. Thank you again and feel free to let me know if you have any questions/comments/concerns/suggestions below.

Congratulations Dave! Exciting to see your new endeavors :-) Out of curiosity, are you planning to keep A Cast of Kings separate from Decoding TV for now? Or is your plan to eventually combine them? Or maybe you don't know yet / don't want to answer yet, and that's cool too of course

Hi Dave, excited for this, while I am happy to support the rise of the Chenpire across both Patreon and Substack I would personally love an option where I can kick a few bucks more and get Scott’s BO and everything else under one roof
