Patrons,

I've just published my final podcast episode of the year: Five lessons from 2021, over on Culturally Relevant (Apple Podcasts, Spotify). This is not a happy or optimistic episode; it's pretty raw and emotional. But what I hope it offers you is some insight into the thought process of someone else out there who's reading about what's going on, processing it, and struggling with it.

Thanks for all of your support this year. It's meant so much to me and helped me to understand who and what I want to be as a creator online. I'm looking forward to a very interesting 2022 and I plan to be here to talk about it with y'all!

Please have a safe and happy new year. Thanks again.

Hi David, thanks for sharing your thoughts. As for living with COVID-19 with a possibly more rigorous approach, I would like to share another Patreon supported podcast, “This Week in Virology ( TWiV )” , part of the microbe.tv. The podcast is hosted by a panel of virology and infectious disease specialist and researchers, with regular updates on current peer-reviewed and pre-reviewed research results, especially SARS-CoV-2 related topics Wish you all the best

Thank you for sharing your raw emotions with us, Dave. It does help to hear someone else acknowledge the problems going on in our country when family and friends seem to be ignoring them. Another coping mechanism for me is listening to music. I've been listening to Ben Harper's Welcome to the Cruel World a lot during the pandemic. The album is from '94, but it plays as though it was written today. In the titular track he sings, "It's been cruel from the beginning, it will be cruel when we're done". For me, it's somehow helpful to know that things have always been bad. They may seem worse now (and they may actually be worse in some ways), but we as a species have always dealt with the same problems. I'm not sure why I find that helpful - I guess it just puts me at ease knowing the problems we're facing today are not necessarily unique. If nothing else, his down-tempo blues style and the trembling of his slide guitar helps to calm me down. At the end of the day, we do what we can to make the world a better place and "try to enjoy your stay".
