David debates the ending of Midnight Mass with Brendan Foley from Black Sun Dispatches.  Massive SPOILERS in the audio (and in the comments below), obviously.

This Twitter Space spawned because Brendan tweeted that he was not a fan of a major decision that Midnight Mass makes towards the end of the show. I wanted to know what that decision was. We debated whether said decision is truly as impactful as Brendan thinks it is. Let me know what you think!

A part of Riley's death feeds into the theme that a person's influence lives past their lives. The moment you see him in episode 7 reinforces that. Erin's last thoughts reflect Riley's influence, and reflects the motif of people welcoming you to the other side when you finally go. None of this would have the same emotional impact if Riley made it through the end. Plus, I cannot think of any way to end episode 5 with the same level of emotional impact.

Great conversation, I’m with you Dave. I loved the experience of realizing what Riley was doing taking the boat out, feeling the sadness and surprise. Structurally it’s similar to Hitchcock killing off Janet Leigh in Psycho, perhaps even with similar timing considering the length of the show. Also you mentioned at the beginning of the conversation to forgive the audio quality. As a heads up I often use one of my USB mics with my iPhone. I can connect my MV7 or another USB mic using Apple’s camera connection kit. I often do this if I’m recording videos straight to my phone for TikTok for instance. I thought the audio was fine, just thought I would share a little geek knowledge :).
