As I mentioned a few times, Cuddle Kobold came in kind of hot last night. I was really pleased how much of my list I was able to check off, but there's still a few things I definitely want to address, and I'm right now trying to get the Quest 2 version to behave. Right now I'm thinking about:
- Some weird player physics bugs. This happens in part due to the shrinking, but sometimes you appear up-high and need to teleport down.
- Kobold can't be picked up in the second half. Adding the basic character controller really complicated that process, and my attempts to fix it haven't gone well so far. The Character Controller could be replaced with something better anyway, but it's weird the things I've tried haven't worked. I must be overlooking something.
- The Audio Balancing is probably not the best. The experience is very different hearing it from the Quest 2 speakers vs. using a set of Headphones. I wanted you to be able to locate the gems by sound, but I didn't want them to be constant droning.
- There's no Title Screen, and the Game Over is a little less animated than I planned, but probably better for the scope of this spin-off project.
- Transitions between Nighttime and Daytime are a little choppy, but I don't have the benefit of the SteamVR compositor with the SDK I'm currently using. I would like to find a better solution for the future, of course.
- Kobold doesn't animate their mouth when they chew or talk, and that was originally part of the intentional silliness, but I should probably try to rough in something basic.
- Your position is supposed to save and restore between scene transitions. It still won't be seamless and it might introduce some collision issues with different layouts, so maybe it's best it doesn't.
- I want to add a Cheats Menu that will let you adjust framerates, give you another way to skip to or from the chase game, reset yourself or the Kobold's position, adjust the framerate, and turn on...
- A Harder Mode, or Modes. Just as a giggle for those who want it, I want to make a toggle that boosts the Kobold's speed, and increases their nibbling speed with each phase. I'm also thinking about a One Hit Mode, but I've caught them snacking even when the player should be safe, so that might be a little too fiddly.
But I want to hear from you! Leave your comments below. I could only really test on one set of hardware in a very limited capacity before I needed to release it. (To make it for Holidaymas, which I definitely officially did.)
So my questions: Did it run OK for you? What VR headset did you use, and what controllers? Did you experience any significant performance hiccups or outright crashes? Did you notice anything strange? Did you have any difficulties playing the mini-game?
If you'd like to, leave your feedback as comments below. I haven't heard anything about the teaser since releasing it, so for all I know it could be refusing to run outside of my PC. I certainly hope not! So I'd love to hear from you about your experience so far. Thank you again for playing!
