How a paralyzed girl break her legs?

She does after all pilot a mecha. And they never explained in detail how she became paralized. Given the fact she s a pilot it is very likely it was an acident during combat or training suffering more than just a back injury. Why else would you have a disabled girl pilot a war machine if she wasn t doing it before her acident already. Perhaps I should not apply logic when talking about +- 14 year old children piloting mechas...

In fact, there is a biography about Ayase about what she was doing in the army before the story started which I don't know if it have an English version. Although it did not explain why they choose a paralyzed teenage girl as a pilot. I just curious about how Ayase break her legs again. Seems that she stay in wheelchair all the time. Maybe she fall from her wheelchair? Or she just like cast
