C - INTO THE WOODS

Comments

Mike Dispo

Cinderella and the Baker's Wife have more existential, abstract realizations, reflecting their maturity level. Cinderella questions her identity -- is she better off with her stepmother where life is predictable but she has nothing to lose, or does she go with the Prince for life she isn't prepared for? She is aware her choice to not choose (a more feminist version of Cinderella than we're used to) would define her future. The Baker's Wife is, in real time, deciding to face the path she has carved out for herself -- a simple life with the baker and a son -- even when faced with temptation. More importantly, she learns that getting what you want all the time is boring and you can never appreciate life that way. Her lesson is the epitome of "careful the wish you make..." Upon learning what she needed to learn, her time in the woods is done and she dies having reached enlightenment.
