Bev truly becomes quite the loquacious puppet master starting in this episode. It's clear after his kills Joe that Pruitt is lost in his design for the island of Crockett but Bev steps up with a deadly zeal to steer him, even in his session with Riley he is on blind auto-pilot priest mode that feels instantly cold and impersonal from the previous sessions we've seen from them. There is a great article Mike Flanagan wrote for Bloody-Disgusting that dives into his personal journey and perspective creating Midnight Mass but I think it may be spoilery to read until after you finish the series.

Mike F. at the end of the day is a horror writer and in this tale did a new and interesting take on a vampire story. Within it, he really did try to encapsulate the good messages in Christianity...like what you were moved by in the earlier episodes and what got you to like Paul. He IS a likable character. The thing is that Paul took his journey in his older self to see it as his own miracle and was misled to believe that the vampire was an angel. He was not looking at this thing as a beast or thinking about the movies. He was so motivated by tales in the Bible to lead him to believe that this was an Angel. And Angels can be terrifying in true sight. He saw the wings and really felt that he was given a sacrament that healed him and made him young and so he wanted to spread that to his struggling town. Of course, being that this is a horror show by a horror writer, it's going to be dark and the only truly cruel person in the show is Bev. But Paul's intentions were good, he just gravely misunderstood and put his own faith in God mistakenly into a primal beast. Mike F. isn't trying to convey that this beast really is an angel. That was just Paul's view because he had faith in God and saw it as a miracle and that he was sent an Angel. I really enjoy your reactions on this series and I enjoyed this series very much.
