I'm so interested to see your reaction to this. Unfortunately I have not seen many Indian films, but I did have a great time watching Baahubali and Baahubali 2. While I do have a couple of criticisms (although it might just be cultural differences since I'm so accustomed to watching films with more Hollywood/Western sensibilities and attitudes), it's so big, vibrant, dramatic, and just a lot of fun. My favourite thing by far is the music, it's so catchy. I actually went through a phase of listening to the soundtrack on loop because the songs were stuck in my head haha.

I like the colours and music too. The story line seemed very familiar - Moses, 10 commandments, and other stories into one.

Seriously, with that kind of super-strength, Baahubali should be an Avenger! What I love about this saga is that Motherhood is a central theme, exemplified by the three mothers: Sanga, Devasena, and Sivagami. One of the basic tenets of Hinduism, since the time of the Vedas and beyond, is the Sanskrit phrase “Matha, Pitha, Guru, Deivam”. Transalation: “Mother, Father, Teacher, God”. It specifies the order in which one should offer reverence, i.e., the hierarchy in which one should respect these entities. Mother comes first, and God fourth! In the opening scene, Shiva breaks apart a god’s shrine and moves it to another location. In almost any other circumstance, it would be a sacrilegious act, but not so here, because the purpose behind it was to help his mother and it was done with respect and almost no damage to the central “lingam” (stone shrine). It is most common for Hindus to name children after Hindu gods, saints, and spiritual leaders. Yes, Shiva was named after Lord Shiva. I was named after a 17th century saint, Sri Raghavendra Tirtha (born in 1595). Compare Kattappa with General Okoye of the Dora Milaje (in the film “Black Panther (2018)”). They are both loyal to the throne, no matter who sits on it. When Okoye realized that T’Challa was not dead and the challenge was not complete, her loyalty shifted to T’Challa, the true king. Similarly, when Kattappa realized that Devasena’s son Mahendra Baahubali was not dead and is the true king, his loyalty shifted to Mahendra (the dramatic scene where he turns from attacking Mahendra to kneeling and skidding to a halt before him with outstretched arms). I am not fond of abrupt music videos (formally known as “item numbers”) that serve little or no purpose in advancing the storyline but are added just for the suggestive lyrics and raunchy glamour; for example, the dance number in Sighapura with the three dancing girls. They just make the film unnecessarily longer. (Yup, the film was simultaneously shot in two languages.) All other languages in which the film was released (including this Hindi language version) are dubs. There’s just something odd about the lip movements not matching the dialogue that bothers me whenever I watch a dubbed version of a film (even if the original language is a foreign language that I don’t know, like German or Korean)!

Kemi, the more you comment on this reaction during the movie and when you pause in between the more I am able to follow the storyline I believe I'm caught up by now, I am enjoying this reaction!

Thank you for your post I find it very informative I am used to dubbed movies. as long as the story line does not lose my attention, I find I can continue watching it the movie. 😊
