This movie just warms one's heart, it's full of wonder, life and emotions. Really a precious work of art

I love this movie so much. When I saw it as a child, it really opened my eyes to other cultures and experiences, and introduced me to all the other Studio Ghibli movies there are. A lot of Ghibli films are based around themes from Shintoism, a very old nature-based religion in Japan. In Shinto, gods or spirits are known as "kami." According to the World History Encyclopedia, "Kami are attracted by purity - both physical and spiritual - and repelled by the lack of it, including disharmony. Kami are particularly associated with nature and may be present at sites such as mountains, waterfalls, trees, and unusually shaped rocks. For this reason, there are said to be 8 million kami." So, in Spirited Away, you have a bathhouse full of kami, some taking a more "human" form, though they are, or once were, the spirit of a particular natural element. Just like Haku is a river spirit who is lost because his river was filled in to make room for apartment development. But also, the "stink spirit" was a river spirit who needed Chihiro's help, because the river had been polluted (which is why a bunch of trash came out of him when everyone pulled on the bicycle handle). This was also inspired by a real experience for Hayao Miyazaki (the director of this movie and co-founder of Studio Ghibli). There once was a polluted river near his home, and he was part of a team that worked very hard to clean the river. They pulled a bicycle out of the river one day, just as Chihiro found the bicycle inside the polluted spirit. Eventually, Miyazaki's river was cleaned and the fish even came back 💕 So much to learn from this movie and how humans should take better care of our planet 💚 and how we need to be less greedy. And I just love Chihiro's journey and how she grows from the adventure. The comparison between her clinging to her mother in fear in the tunnel at the beginning, and then clinging at the end to resist looking back. Beautiful! Love the reaction, as always!!
