This is set in 1931, when the Nazi party was rising in Germany, but not yet in power. That's why German Jews, though they saw the threat, didn't leave. When the Nazis took power in 1933, many Jews did leave. Sadly, many others did not. I know there are a lot of documentaries out there about the rise of Hitler, though I'm not sure how many are readily available. "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" is one I remember, but that was made many years ago. There is a 6-part series titled "Hitler" that always seems to be rerun on the American Heroes Channel, but I don't know if you have access to it. Joel Grey, who won the Oscar for playing the Master Of Ceremonies, also played the role in the original Broadway production, where he won the Tony award. Though he's done a good amount of movies and TV, he's a legend on Broadway, where he's continued to star into his 80's.
