As for Eli being blind, if you watch the film again, this time, thinking of him as a blind man, you notice he does things that a blind person might do when discovering their environment. Things that make you wonder if he didn't see what you thought he saw that made him step back such as in the beginning of the film where he finds the man hanging from the closet. Was it the man hanging that startled him, or was it the door falling off the hinges? He could easily determine which direction to go by what direction the Sun depending on the time of day. That is, in the morning, the Sun rises in the East (in North America) so he knows the opposite direction is West. By the same token, he can check direction during the waning hours as the Sun will set in the West. I believe Eli was a man with a special calling to bring the book West. I do think he had memorized it over the years despite being able to simply read it from the braille. I think he would have felt the mission was too important to leave it up to only the braille copy of the book. I feel he memorized the book and kept refreshing his memory by re-reading it, in order to keep a backup copy so to speak in his mind. He mentioned at the very end when praying how he was very sorry for wrong he had done. Prior to that he mentioned to Solara that he was so wrapped up in the mission and the book that he nearly forgot the main point the book was teaching, to do for others more than you would do for yourself. That lead me to feel that perhaps his being shot and struggling when Carnegie found him and Solara at the elderly couples home happened somewhat as a reminder for him that he needed to defend the weak and helpless such as the couple that were murdered on the road by the biker crew early on when Eli said it wasn't his concern and that he should just stay on the path. Great story, I've loved it and was so excited when I saw that you would be doing the reaction to it. Thank you for watching the film and sharing your reactions and thoughts with us! :)
