PAUL SIMON - OBVIOUS CHILD

Comments

This is one of my favorite Paul Simon songs. I love how he can make the passage from carefree youth ("these songs are true/these days are ours/these tears are free") to pensive middle-age in just a few lines (something I especially identify with as I contemplate my own cage-like rooms and thinning brown hair 🤔). And I love the line "The cross is in the ballpark," even though I'm not 100% sure what it means. "In the ballpark" is American slang referring to something that, while it isn't exactly what you want or immediately at hand, it is at least near enough, not out of reach. So whatever "the cross" is (your necessary burden? Your faith?) you can still get to it. And since he says "the cross is in the ballpark" in both the first, youthful verse, and the closing middle-aged one, he's saying it shouldn't be abandoned, even if you feel yourself growing older.
