Yes that whole part of gambling for his clothes. That was straight out of the Gospel. Ohhh didnt know Dylan was Jewish,...

This is such a great song, and I love how you go right to the heart of it, the mournfulness and the loss. I've always thought of it as all being Biblical, specifically the story of Jesus and Mary (his mother, though sometimes I think it's Mary Magdalene), told from Jesus's point of view. Not just the 'crown of thorns' reference, but especially the later verses about how "I offered up my innocence, got repaid with scorn" and "in a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes" seem straight out of the gospels. Even the line about "living in a foreign country, but bound to cross the line" seems a rewrite of Jesus's promise to return. (I should add here that I'm Jewish, not Christian, but then, so was Dylan when he wrote this. He became a Christian for a while after this. I'm not sure what he is now.)

Oops, sorry to KSO for deleting my first post. It had couple of typos and when I tried to edit it, I couldn't get the changes to stay, so I deleted and reposted. I did get your response in my e-mail, even though it can't be seen here now.
