This is my perspective of why we don't get to see the opening of the brown envelope and what is inside. I belive why we don't see what's in the brown envelope is because it was for Mark Wahlberg's character. Because Leo quotes "if something were to happen to me you open this" clearly, something happens to him & then she opens it and gives over the confidential information over to Dignam which is played by Mark Walberg. Also it's implied ontop of the roof of the final secen that Leonardo DeCaprio quotes "I've got boxes of tapes" and whatever else so I think they just skipped that part because it's probably, supposed to be presumed that the audience should know already that Mark Walberg knew who the rat was by the scene that we don't get to see him open up the envelope.

By the way, the scene when Jack Nicholson is interrogating Leonardo DeCaprio, Jack Nicholson pulls a real gun on Leo to scare him, and Leonardo DeCaprio was genuinely scared. Leonardo DeCaprio wasn't even expecting it.
