C - COMPANY - PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

I think I prefer the overall direction in this version compared to the 2006 one. A lot of the acting and movements in the 2006 one was constrained by John Doyle's vision of everyone playing an instrument (which I think worked better in his other productions). The acting here felt more natural, the movements were better, the staging was more approachable and accessible, especially for someone who won't be as familiar to the show. I feel like Company isn't a very straightforward show since it doesn't really have a plot but it makes you think, so inserting directorial flairs like none of the actors facing each other or limited touching (ex. Sarah and David's physical comedy) makes the material harder to consume and digest as it is (in my opinion). In terms of singing, I prefer Raul Esparza's Being Alive, but I think that's the only version 2006 has an edge over this one, and maybe Getting Married Today. I prefer this version of Ladies Who Lunch, Sorry/Grateful, and Another Hundred People so much more.

Okay okay okay, I know I'm late to the party and probably no one will see this BUT. I watched a version of Company years ago, and I loved the music, loved the story, but felt like I didn't really want to see it again (downloaded the soundtrack though for sure). I decided to watch this performance for two reasons - Patti LuPone singing Ladies who Lunch, and because you reacted to it. WOW. I am SO glad you did - I watched it and then immediately restarted it and watched it all over again. This was fantastic, and your reaction, as always, makes it even more enjoyable.
